Straits of Mackinac/Mackinac Island Trip

Skill Level: Intermediate to advanced (A skills program is available at our kayak school near Crystal Lake to help you prepare for this trip. We would also be happy to recommend a certified instructor in your area.)

Have you ever driven across that five mile span of Mackinac bridge and wondered what it would be like to paddle way down there? If you have a little experience and some basic skills (bracing and capsize recovery practice), you can find out! Join us for a long weekend paddle across from St. Ignace to a really sweet little campsite on a small public island. During our stay, we'll get to swim in the calm bay, explore other nearby islands and maybe even do an evening paddle over to Mackinac island, exchange our booties for dancing shoes and go out on the town. Follow this up with a moonlight paddle back to our quiet camp and you've got a recipe for a truly unique trip. This is a great trip for paddling couples and families with older children.

Day 1) Meet at the city marina in St. Ignace at noon. After an orientation, we'll pack and head across toward the islands, pausing for ferries and set up our camp for the weekend.

Days 2-3) Spend the next couple of days paddling under Arch Rock, practicing skills in the lagoon, crossing to Bois Blanc island and getting some great photos of the Mighty Mac looming behind your kayak!

Day 4) After breaking camp and a few last photos, we'll paddle back to our launch site and prepare for an early afternoon departure for points south.

Cost includes professional guide/instructor, all group gear (dry bags, tents, kitchen, safety gear) and the best backcountry meals you've ever wrapped your mouth around. You do need a kayak at least 15 feet long with fore and aft floatation to participate in this trip. Quality low cost rentals can be had from Crystal Lake Adventure Sports (231-882-2527) -we can even transport them for you!

Registration: A $150 deposit is required to hold your space. We'll mail you an equipment list and tripper survey when you register. Your deposit is refundable until 30 days before the trip and your balance is also due 30 days prior to departure. Space is limited to 8, so plan ahead...
