Uncommon News Spring 2006

Uncommon Adventures

As our landscapes start to go from winter colors to greens we start to turn our thoughts to warmer weather and playing on water.  Please remember that even though the days may be warming, the water is still extremely cold and be sure to dress for the water temperature.

Have fun, but be prepared.  If you can’t find a wetsuit or drysuit locally, give us a call and we can order one for you.  Better safe and

smiling, then, well, not.

We have a spring and summer packed full of instructional programs and trips ranging from weekend Sleeping Bear Samplers to Alaskan Expeditions.  We are very actively booking everything well into the fall right now, so check out:  www.uncommonadv.com for a full schedule.

I’d like to extend a warm thanks to all of those who joined us in Roatan this year.  Nice paddling, great coral, fun experiences with the native children, giant sea turtles, river rock jumps, raucous Oropendulas and great company all combined to make it one of our most enjoyable seasons ever.  Yes, we are taking bookings now for next season.  Dates will be set by the end of the month.

*New In-house Flight Service: .  One new service we are offering to our clients who are flying is flight scheduling.  By doing this in-house we are hoping to get people better schedules at more competitive rates for our trips to Alaska , and next year, .  It will also help to be sure you get all the proper flight parameters lined up.  This will be a fee-added service ($30) that we match to be sure that you get the best possible flightplan.  This will be handled by Sally Laird, my assistant, and Georgia Pergakis.  Between the two of them, they have many years of airline work experience as employees, agents and career travelers.  If it can be done, they'll figure a way to do it.  The flat $30 fee is paid to Uncommon Adventures and we pay them $60 on your behalf.  Flights are booked directly through them with a CC#.  Here is 's direct e-mail for booking:  traveldevas@yahoo.com

E-commerce:   It is now possible to book directly through our website or through our toll-free number using your choice of Credit Card.

Space available for summer…..

Alaska : Both our Shuyak Island Circumnavigation and Prince William Sound trips are going this summer, but there are a few spaces left.  If you are a 4-star paddler and up for a challenge, then perhaps Shuyak (near Kodiak Island ) is right for you.  Perhaps you have a few skills, but would rather paddle amongst tidewater glaciers, whales, puffins and Stellar Sea Lions?  Then our Heart of Prince William Sound trip may be your cup of tea.  Both Feature premium outfitting with NDK Explorers, two guides with 40 years combined guiding/coaching experience, terrific food and complete ground costs from Anchorage .

Isle Royale : We have one opening left for our July 15 Isle Royale trip and this will be a great group!  We only take 5 people and the price includes the ferry and hotel nights before and after. http://www.uncommonadv.com/kayaking/great-lakes/isle-royale.html

Georgian Bay/Killarney: This is my favorite Great Lakes destination and we have a trip July 30-Aug 5 that is a wonderful kayak camping experience for all skill levels and a great dollar value.  Check it out! http://www.uncommonadv.com/kayaking/great-lakes/killarney.html

Coming in Autumn…

Are you looking for a kayak? We are clearing out some of our Wilderness Systems Temptest 170 and 165’s to make room for new ones just like them.  We love these boats!  The sea kayaks come with a day hatch (3 bulkheads), a well-designed skeg and handle great with a slight English accent.  Each has two season use:   $900 for the 165’s and $950 for the 170.  Skirts and paddles are available also.  Call 866-882-5525 for details!

East Canoe and Kayak Festival-April 20-23 If any of you are going to be in the neighborhood of Charleston, SC at

the end of this month, I’ll be there doing by usual unorthodox style rescue teaching, food demos where the food really flies and a few slide show previews to some incredible places!  I hope to see you there.
